To curb dangerous driving behavior, CHP’s “maximum enforcement period” (MEP) kicks off at 6 p.m. Tuesday and runs through late Wednesday night. This high-visibility operation mirrors the 30-hour effort conducted over Christmas and focuses on catching drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs, as well as speeders and reckless motorists.
“Our officers are dedicated to protecting the public throughout the holidays,” said CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee. “Safe travels are possible when every driver makes responsible decisions before hitting the road.”
The Numbers
Statistics from previous years underscore the importance of this initiative. During the 2023-24 New Year’s MEP, CHP officers made 892 DUI arrests statewide—an increase from 570 during the prior year’s campaign.
It’s worth noting that last year’s enforcement window spanned a long holiday weekend, whereas this year’s midweek timing shortens the deployment. Nevertheless, the CHP is determined to make every hour count.
