Construction Workers Injured in Suspected DUI Crash on San Diego Freeway Ramp
Last week, a suspected drunken driver veered off the roadway and struck three construction workers on a freeway on-ramp in San Diego, injuring them. The incident occurred Tuesday November 19th around 3:20 a.m. on the Market Street on-ramp to northbound Interstate 805 in the Chollas View area, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
Details of the Incident
CHP Officer Stephany Perez reported that a 29-year-old woman was driving a 2014 Ford Escape when she lost control of the vehicle for reasons yet to be determined. The car veered off the roadway and hit the workers, who were laying concrete on the on-ramp as part of a Caltrans project. The vehicle then continued forward and collided with a trailer parked on the shoulder.
A San Diego police officer witnessed the crash, and CHP officers later conducted a DUI evaluation on the driver. Police arrested her on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Aftermath
Emergency responders transported the injured construction workers, all subcontractors for Caltrans, to a local hospital. Fortunately, they sustained moderate injuries and are on track to recover. Despite the injuries and the severity of the crash, officials reopened the freeway on-ramp by 4:30 a.m., minimizing disruption to morning commuters.
Safety Reminder
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of impaired driving, particularly in areas where road crews are at work. Construction zones require heightened caution from drivers, as workers are often in close proximity to moving traffic. Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident. Meanwhile, this crash underscores the importance of prioritizing road safety to protect both drivers and workers.
