Will there be money to protect the citizens of San Diego from murder, rape and robbery this weekend, San Diego Union-Tribune commentators ask, San Diego DUI lawyers report. There already is no money for traffic accidents or burglaries, says one commentator, but there is plenty of money to fund men to make DUI arrests, say California attorneys.
Here’s what the U-T says:
San Diego law enforcement and Mothers Against Drunk Driving gathered at Mission Bay Tuesday morning to announce efforts to battle drunken driving during the Fourth of July holiday.
Operation Safeguard, a five-day, countywide effort that begins Wednesday to prevent alcohol-related deaths and injuries, will mean stricter enforcement through DUI checkpoints, roving DUI patrols and harsher punishment for those who break social host laws.
Law enforcement wants to cut down on drunken driving incidents that typically happen on holidays.
In 2011, the county had about seven drug- and alcohol-related accidents a day, said county Sheriff Bill Gore. All were “preventable accidents on the streets,” Gore said.
Since then, the number of incidents has gone up, but San Diego Police Chief Bill Lansdowne said he thinks it’s because of hyper-vigilant citizens rather than a rise in the amount of people driving under the influence.
“We have asked the community to step up, which is what they have done,” Lansdowne said. If motorists see someone driving erratically, they are calling 911, “and we will get someone there quickly,” he said.
With social host laws, police officers and sheriff’s deputies will be targeting this weekend party hosts who serve alcohol to minors.
The Sheriff’s Department is also promoting its Start Smart Program, a free two-hour class for new teenage drives. To find more information about it, go to

Meanwhile, if you need the police to actually respond to an auto accident or a burglary, forget it…There is no revenue in that kind of activity.
