San Diego drunk driving arrests are up while DUI arrests are down in California, lawyers say

California Highway Patrol officers arrested 34 alleged “DUI” drivers in San Diego County between New Year’s Eve and Friday morning, compared to 20 DUI arrests in the year-ago holiday period.

In California, a total of 510 DUI arrests were made on freeways and in unincorporated areas between 6 p.m. Wednesday and 6 a.m. Friday, compared to 457 in the comparable year-ago holiday period, according to the CHP.

Earlier in the week, the California Highway Patrol initially reported fewer drunken driving arrests statewide during the 2015 New Year’s holiday than last year, but that wasn’t the case for San Diego County, DUI lawyers are told.

In a 12-hour span from New Year’s Eve to New Year’s Day 2014, there were 324 DUI arrests statewide and 14 in San Diego. In the same time span that led into this year’s holiday, there were 309 DUI arrests statewide and 20 in San Diego County — a 4.

DUI arrests were also up in Orange County. Last year, CHP arrested 14 drivers there. This year, they arrested 22, a 57 percent increase.

While San Diego County had no fatalities last year, there was one this year. Statewide, fatalities held steady at five. Orange County had no reported fatalities.

The DUI statistics reflect only those arrests made by the Highway Patrol. They cover the period 6:01 p.m. Dec. 31 to 6:00 a.m. Jan. 1. The fatality count is based on reports from all relevant law-enforcement agencies.

The Highway Patrol’s jurisdiction includes all freeways and all roads located in unincorporated areas.
